Our Chapter History

Delta Lambda

The establishment of the Delta Lambda Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in the Youngstown community was originally envisioned by seven dedicated sorors. They devoted an enormous amount of time and energy to fulfill their endeavor, working diligently to meet the requirements for chapter establishment set forth by the Grand Chapter, ultimately leading to the formation of the Youngstown Alumnae Chapter.

Official Charter Date

On May 19, 1951, four women were initiated as charter members, leading to the formal establishment of the Delta Lambda Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Charlene Alexander served as the first president of this significant chapter, which later contributed to the formation of the Youngstown Alumnae Chapter.

Youngstown Alumnae

For a number of years, the Delta Lambda Chapter operated as a mixed chapter of graduate and undergraduate sorors within the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. However, on February 17, 1968, a new undergraduate chapter—Zeta Gamma—was established, providing an additional local Delta organization. The Delta Lambda Chapter continued as a mixed chapter until the early seventies, by which time undergraduate membership had seriously decreased. In May 1975, marking the 25th anniversary of the existence of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in Youngstown, the Delta Lambda Chapter officially transitioned to become the Youngstown Alumnae Chapter.

Anniversaries

The Youngstown Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority celebrated significant milestones, marking its 50th anniversary in 2001, its 60th in 2011, and its 65th in 2016 with grand celebrations. Committed to the goals set forth by the Grand Chapter throughout its 60-year history, the Youngstown Alumnae Chapter has focused on mentoring and engaging youth in service learning. Notably, their initiatives include Delta GEMS (Growing & Empowering Myself Successfully) for young ladies aged 14-18 and Delta Academy for younger girls aged 11-14. These programs designed by the Delta Lambda Chapter promote goal setting, academic preparedness, and a strong commitment to the community. Through these projects, the young girls are encouraged to enhance their self-image, practice positive attitudes, and build self-confidence, empowering them to become leaders in the 21st century.
